The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has called for additional financial support to enable the government to complete the proposed University of Science and Technology in Damongo in the Savanna Region.

He made the call during discussions with the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Cong Song, on efforts to advance the project.

The Government of Ghana secured a US$30 million grant from China last year to commence construction of the university.

In a statement dated September 2, 2026, the minister said the proposed university is expected to become a centre of excellence in Science and Technology, Robotics, Digital Sciences and Artificial Intelligence, among other emerging fields.

However, he said the grant would not be sufficient to fully establish and equip the university, as the cost of constructing and equipping a new university is estimated to exceed US$100 million.

“The US$30 million grant will not be sufficient to fully finance the establishment of the university,” Iddrisu said.

He therefore urged for stronger partnerships and additional funding to provide the infrastructure and facilities required to make the project a reality.

Haruna Iddrisu also disclosed that government has a broader plan to establish universities in regions that currently do not have one.

He said the initiative forms part of efforts to expand access to quality tertiary education and promote balanced national development.

The Chinese Ambassador, Cong Song, commended him for his leadership and commitment to Ghana’s education transformation agenda.

He reaffirmed the importance of Ghana-China cooperation in advancing educational development and strengthening bilateral relations for the mutual benefit of both countries.
