Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, has pledged to approach his new responsibility with humility, integrity and a strong sense of duty.

Ayariga said his focus would be on listening, engaging and working with stakeholders to develop practical solutions that improve the lives of Ghanaians.

“I approach this assignment with humility and a strong sense of duty. My commitment is to listen, engage, and work with all stakeholders to deliver practical solutions that improve the lives of our people,” he said.

In a post shared on Facebook on September 1, 2026, the Minister said he remained guided by the principles of integrity, fairness, accountability and service to the national interest as he begins his new role.

“As I begin this new chapter, I remain guided by the principles of integrity, fairness, accountability, and service to the national interest,” he stated.

Ayariga was sworn into office on Saturday, August 29, 2026, by President John Dramani Mahama at Jubilee House.

He expressed gratitude to President Mahama for the confidence reposed in him and to Parliament for approving his nomination.

He also thanked Ghanaians, colleagues, friends and well-wishers for their prayers and encouragement throughout the approval process.

Ayariga acknowledged the weight of his new portfolio, which includes oversight of local government, chieftaincy and religious affairs.

“The responsibility is great, but I am confident that with God’s guidance, the support of the president, and the collective efforts of all stakeholders, we can make meaningful progress,” he stated.

He noted that local government has an important role in bringing development closer to citizens, strengthening decentralisation and ensuring that Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies are responsive and accountable to the communities they serve.

Ayariga further pledged to work closely with traditional authorities and religious institutions, describing their contributions as vital to national cohesion, peace and development.
