The leadership of the teacher unions has called off its threatened strike action following a meeting with the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, over concerns regarding the placement of teachers on the appropriate salary scales.

The decision follows assurances and measures agreed upon at the meeting to resolve the concerns and ensure that affected teachers receive their rightful salaries.

In a statement issued on August 31, 2026, the Ministry of Education said one of the key resolutions was that teachers would not be required to travel to their respective District Education Offices to submit payslips for the salary-scale placement process.

“Teachers will not be required to travel to their respective District Education Offices to submit payslips for the purpose of salary-scale placement.

“Close to 80,000 teachers will be appropriately placed on their correct salary scales as part of the process,” the Ministry indicated.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) is expected to provide the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department with the requisite data to facilitate the necessary adjustments and payments to the affected teachers.

The Ministry said the agreement with the unions was reached following a constructive engagement aimed at resolving the matter and preventing disruptions to teaching and learning.

It expressed appreciation to the leadership of the teacher unions for their constructive engagement and commitment to resolving the matter in the interest of Ghana’s education system and, most importantly, the welfare of teachers.

The Ministry further assured teachers that it remains committed to working with all relevant stakeholders to ensure that they receive their rightful entitlements in a timely and efficient manner.
