The Ghana Police Service has honoured an officer after he risked his life to save victims of a fire outbreak in the Western Region.

According to a statement released by the service, the incident occurred on August 26, 2026, after a fire broke out at the Aboso Main Lorry Station in the Western Region.

The blaze quickly engulfed several shops at the busy station, causing extensive damage to property and leaving panicked traders and commuters scrambling for safety.

Arriving as the first responder on the scene, Inspector Hance Atubra, the officer stationed at the Tarkwa Divisional Headquarters immediately took charge of the chaotic scene as flames engulfed multiple shops.

Disregarding his personal safety, charged directly into thick smoke and raging flames to pull trapped victims and traders trapped by the blaze, and successfully evacuated them to safety before the fire spread further.

A video trending on social media showed eyewitnesses and community members praising and hailing the tired looking inspector.

But that was not all, in response to his bravery, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno officially promoted Inspector Hance Atubra to the rank of Chief Inspector.

“His actions were highly commended by people who witnessed the incident, leading to a recommendation for his promotion in recognition of his courage, quick response and efforts to save life and property.

“The promotion underscores the Police Administration’s commitment to recognising and rewarding officers who demonstrate exceptional courage, dedication and commitment to duty,” a statement by the Ghana Police Service stated.
