Seven people are reportedly feared dead after a galamsey pit collapsed overnight at Asaman Tamfoe near Anyinam in the Eastern Region.
According to a video shared by media personality Johnnie Hughes on X, on August 30, 2026, the victims were allegedly engaged in illegal mining when the pit caved in, trapping them underground.
Rescue efforts are currently underway as people at the site work to retrieve those trapped in the collapsed pit.
A video accompanying the report showed a heavy-duty excavator and several people trying to rescue one of the victims who was trapped under thick sand.

The rescuers were seen struggling to free the victim as they worked to remove the sand covering him.
The identities of the victims and the exact cause of the collapse are yet to be established. Further details are expected as rescue teams continue efforts at the site.
