President John Dramani Mahama has pledged his continued backing for Ghana Export-Import Bank (GEXIM) as the institution intensifies efforts to recover loans owed by individuals and businesses.

According to the President, recovering the funds is critical to restoring the bank’s capacity to finance viable industrial and commercial ventures that can generate jobs, boost exports and support Ghana’s economic growth.

Mahama made the remarks on Friday, August 28, 2026, during the commissioning of Northshore Apparel, a project financed by GEXIM and Germany’s KfW Development Bank.

He said GEXIM was established to provide funding for enterprises focused on value addition, exports, employment and sustainable development.

However, he alleged that access to the bank’s financing after his previous administration left office became concentrated among politically connected individuals who had no intention of repaying their loans.

“It was the politically well-connected who had access to the financing without any intention to pay back the money,” President Mahama said.

He commended GEXIM CEO Sylvester Adinam Mensah, Board Chairman Dr Joseph Nyarkotei Dorh and their team for pursuing loan defaulters.

“That is why today Sylvester Adinam [Mensah] and his group, the Board Chairman, Dr Joseph Nyarkotei Dorh, are running after so many people who took the money and have not paid. And I will continue to support them to take the money back from those who have taken our money,” he stated.

His comments come amid the ongoing case involving former NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Wontumi, over an alleged GEXIM loan.

The bank said it has also reset its lending approach, insisting that funding decisions will be based on projects’ economic impact rather than sentiments.
