The Paramount Chief of Asebu Traditional Area, Prof Nana Okatakyi Amanfi VII has questioned the relevance of the government’s proposed 24-hour market initiative to his community, arguing that the district’s predominantly agricultural population has little need for midnight shopping.

Speaking during a durbar aired by Mfantseman Radio, the chief said the type of market being proposed under President John Dramani Mahama does not reflect the needs of his district.

“The type of market Mahama is bringing is not what we need in our district,” he stated.

According to the chief, Asebu is predominantly an agricultural community, making it unlikely that residents would patronise a market during the early hours of the morning.

“Abora, Aseebu, Kwaman, Kesi are purely agricultural communities. Whichever community this market is going to be built in, I do not think my people will go there at midnight to go and buy koobi,” he said.

He therefore questioned the practicality of operating a market throughout the night, using the purchase of koobi (salted and dried Tilapia) as an example of goods he believes residents are unlikely to seek at midnight.
