Akosua Manu, Advisor on Gender and Social Protection to NPP flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has demanded a thorough investigation into the death of a woman, identified as Theresa Boakye Dua, who died during childbirth at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge Hospital).

Reacting to the development which has reignited calls for urgent action on maternal health in Ghana on social media, he lamented the rising cases of alleged medical negligence in the country.

In a statement shared on X on August 28, 2026, Akosua sought to address the rising cases of maternal mortality, noting that in 2025 alone, 965 women lost their lives to pregnancy‑related complications.

"In 2025 alone, 965 women in Ghana died from pregnancy-related complications," she stated.

According to her, the era of women leaving home to give birth and never returning must come to an end.

She argued that maternal deaths must no longer be treated as mere statistics, calling instead for a bipartisan parliamentary inquiry to uncover the reasons behind the statistics on maternal mortality.

“This must also become a national conversation. Because when we pay attention, when we put the right systems in place and when we are deliberate, WE SAVE LIVES. No woman should leave home to give life and never return," she added.

Manu further called for a bipartisan parliamentary inquiry into maternal deaths in Ghana.

"I am calling for a bipartisan parliamentary inquiry into maternal deaths in Ghana to understand WHY women are still dying, identify where our systems are failing them, and demand clear, time-bound action," she stated.

Health authorities have previously described maternal mortality as a national emergency, with leading causes including postpartum haemorrhage, hypertensive disorders and sepsis.

The Ministry has outlined strategies aimed at reducing deaths, particularly in high-burden referral and teaching hospitals.
