Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council member Frederick Acheampong has outlined the need for a major rethink of how the Ghana Premier League (GPL) can attract supporters back to the stadium.

Acheampong believes the dwindling attendance at league matches is partly the result of a growing disconnect between clubs and the communities they represent.

Speaking in an interview with GhanaWeb, he called for deliberate efforts to rebuild that relationship and make matchdays more appealing to supporters.

“There’s a disconnection between football and the community. So, we need to reorganise and try to reconnect with the community and energise the support base,” he said.

According to Acheampong, clubs cannot simply expect supporters to spend their money on match tickets without giving them a convincing reason to leave their homes and head to the stadium.

“The supporter won’t give their money to clubs for free. There must be a compelling reason why the supporter would have to come to the stadium and pay,” he explained.

He stressed that improving the matchday experience must be at the heart of efforts to revive stadium attendance across the country.

“We need to make our stadiums friendly, safe and the matches should be exciting to compel people to come in there,” Acheampong added.

His comments come amid concerns over falling attendances at Ghana Premier League venues, with clubs and football authorities searching for ways to reconnect the competition with its traditional fan base.
