The Ghana Football Association has confirmed its decision to retain Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the Black Stars, with negotiations over his new contract currently ongoing.

GFA Executive Council member Fred Acheampong, speaking with Ghanaweb Sports, says the decision was reached after the Executive Council and management met to discuss the coach’s future.

“We met as a team, as the Executive Council and the management, and everybody, and we thought that we should allow the coach to continue. So that is the position of the Ghana Football Association, that we think that Carlos Queiroz should continue as the coach of the Black Stars,” he said.

Acheampong says the terms of Queiroz’s new deal will differ from the agreement he had for the 2026 World Cup, given the different nature and duration of the AFCON qualifying assignment.

“What is left now is the negotiations. Obviously, the terms with which he came to manage the Black Stars for the World Cup cannot be the same terms with which he can manage the qualifiers and other stuff,” he stated.

He adds that discussions are also being held over the composition of Queiroz’s backroom staff, with the GFA expected to agree on a structure suitable for the longer-term management of the Black Stars.

“The negotiation is ongoing. As I speak to you now, we are in a negotiation with the ministry, because don't forget that it is the government that pays the Black Stars coaches,” he added.

Acheampong says the GFA’s priority now is to conclude negotiations on the remuneration and contract agreement ahead of the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
