Former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East and former Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has shared the emotional impact of the violent attack she suffered during the Ablekuma North parliamentary re-run election.

It will be recalled that on July 11, 2025, a group of men assaulted the former lawmaker at a polling station while she was touring centres in the constituency.

The incident formed part of the chaos that briefly disrupted voting in the re-run of the disputed December 2024 parliamentary election.

Months after the attack, Koomson has revealed that she was deeply affected by the ordeal she endured.

However, she stated that what brought her a sense of fulfilment was the realisation that, as a single woman, she had stood her ground and confronted the group of men single-handedly.

“I was deeply saddened when I was admitted to the hospital, wondering why people would treat me that way. Yet, after I was discharged and returned home, I felt a sense of happiness and comfort in my heart," she said.

"...As I went through my phone and watched videos of what transpired, I realised that, as a woman, I had stood my ground and overcome men who sought to overpower me. It was God’s protection that gave me the strength,” she added.

Hawa Koomson further remarked that Ghanaians can be hypocritical.

She explained that whenever the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is in government, citizens expect them to transform the country overnight.

However, when it is the turn of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), those same voices begin to make excuses and fail to hold the government to the same standard.

"And as I often say, Ghanaians can be hypocritical. When the NPP is in power, citizens expect them to transform the country overnight. Yet when it is the turn of the NDC, those same voices fall silent and avoid holding them to the same standard. At the right time, we will return to this matter and discuss it fully," she insisted
