Executive Council Member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Frederick Acheampong, has defended Black Stars coach Carlos Queiroz over criticisms of his defensive approach during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Following the conclusion of the tournament, there was a barrage of criticisms from football fans who were displeased with the Portuguese manager’s tactics, arguing that they were unattractive and unlikely to yield success in winning trophies.

Responding to this, Acheampong asserted that the coach cannot be entirely blamed, noting that he had limited time to prepare the team for the tournament and therefore could not fully implement his ideas.

He added that if Queiroz had some key players such as Mohammed Salisu, Kudus Mohammed, and others available, his approach would have been different, and he should not be overly criticized.

“Those who say he was too defensive… but you see, in that short period, what else could a coach do? He didn’t have much time with the players. And then we’re talking about the Black Stars, who had lost some starters. If Salisu Mohammed, Kudus Mohammed were available, I’m sure they would have started.

"So the team lost a lot, and within that short period, he needed to devise something to achieve the target we gave him, to at least move out of the group stages and qualify for the knockout stages. He needed to do that, and with the limited time he had, he couldn’t influence the team too much,” he explained in an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb TV.

However, the GFA Executive Council member indicated that he would channel the grievances to Queiroz to make adjustments if he continues in his role for the 2027 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

“It’s a concern some people have expressed, and we’ll definitely get that across to him and try to play some beautiful football. Ghana is known for beautiful football. But his ability and capacity, I think, are not in doubt,” he added.
