Ghanaian media personality and broadcaster Kwami Sefa Kayi has apologised to the Minority Leader of Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, over comments describing him as an “extortionist” during a discussion on the Kokrokoo show.

Speaking on the Kokrokoo programme, excerpts of which have been shared on social media, Kwami Sefa Kayi acknowledged that Afenyo-Markin had a point in criticising him for failing to speak up when the allegation was made during the discussion.

He explained that although some panel members referred to Afenyo-Markin as an “extortionist”, he did not intervene to defend him or challenge the allegation.

Sefa Kayi therefore used the platform to apologise to the Minority Leader, admitting that he should have spoken up when Afenyo-Markin’s name was mentioned.

“I want to use this medium to apologise to Afenyo-Markin that I didn’t do well. So, I apologise because he said when his name was mentioned here that he is an extortionist; I didn’t stand for him to speak against it, and I believe that he has a point,” he said.

Meanwhile, Afenyo-Markin has taken legal action against the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, over comments describing him as an “extortionist”.

The Effutu Member of Parliament disclosed the lawsuit when Parliament resumed on Monday, August 24, 2026, following weeks of heated exchanges between the two over GoldBod’s operations and the reported US$1.7 billion loss associated with the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP).

The controversy intensified after Sammy Gyamfi described the Minority Leader as an “extortionist” while responding to Afenyo-Markin’s calls for greater accountability over the reported losses.

Announcing the legal action in Parliament, Afenyo-Markin said he had also sued media organisations that allegedly published or broadcast the statements in question.

He disclosed that writs had been filed in two separate cases.

“I have accordingly caused writs to be filed in Suit Number GT/1029/2026, titled Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin versus Samuel Adu Gyamfi and Multimedia Group Limited at the Accra High Court, and Suit Number GR/ACH/CC/C5/02/2026, titled Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin versus Eric Adjei and Peace FM at the Achimota Circuit Court,” he said.

Afenyo-Markin expressed confidence that the courts would resolve the matter based on the evidence and the applicable law.

“I have every confidence that in the fullness of time, the court will make the appropriate determination,” he added.

The lawsuit comes amid a broader dispute over the financial performance of the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme and claims concerning losses reportedly linked to the initiative.

Afenyo-Markin has repeatedly called on the government and GoldBod to account for the reported US$1.7 billion loss, while Sammy Gyamfi has rejected assertions that GoldBod itself incurred the loss.
