The President of the Ghana Handball Association, Edward Nii Lante Bannerman, has called on the government and corporate Ghana to increase investment in handball and other less-financed sporting disciplines.

He made the appeal during the unveiling of the national team for the Ghana Minifootball Association, while expressing appreciation to the Director-General of the National Sports Authority for facilitating a kitting sponsorship for the female national handball team.

According to him, the intervention came after the NSA Director-General saw the team training at the handball courts and learned that they were preparing for the maiden IHF Nations Trophy 2026 in Ouagadougou.

“For the first time, the DG itself has come on and brought us a sponsorship deal not much to say, but a kitting deal. For us, it's a very good one,” he stated.

He further noted that the national team has participated in about eight tournaments over the past four years, winning gold, silver and bronze medals, despite receiving limited support.

As such, he believes handball has the potential to deliver even more medals for Ghana if it receives the necessary backing.

“I've always said that handball has the potential of doing better than what football is doing for us because, given the chance, we can bring more medals than football is doing,” he added.

He therefore urged the nation and corporate Ghana to pay greater attention to less-financed sporting disciplines, particularly handball.
