Reptiles can be an unwelcome sight in the home, often appearing on walls, ceilings, windows and other corners in search of food and shelter.

While these reptiles are generally harmless and can help control household insects, many people prefer to keep them away from their living spaces.

Fortunately, there are several natural methods that may help discourage lizards from entering or settling in homes.

Egg shells at entry points

Placing clean, dry eggshells near windowsills, door frames and other areas where lizards are frequently spotted is a traditional method believed to discourage them from entering.

The method is based on the belief that lizards may associate the smell of eggshells with potential predators. The shells should be replaced every few days as their scent fades.

Garlic and onion spray

Garlic and onion can also be used to create a natural deterrent because of their strong odours.

To make the spray, crush a few cloves of garlic or chop an onion and soak them in water for several hours. Strain the mixture and spray it around windows, door frames and other possible entry points.

Black pepper or cayenne pepper spray

Black pepper or cayenne pepper mixed with water can also be sprayed around corners, cabinet edges and other areas where lizards frequently appear.

The strong scent is believed to make these areas less attractive to lizards.

Peppermint and eucalyptus

Peppermint and eucalyptus are also commonly used as natural pest deterrents.

A few drops of peppermint or eucalyptus essential oil can be placed around windows, corners and other potential entry points. Growing peppermint near windows may also help create a strong scent that lizards tend to avoid.

Peacock feathers

Placing peacock feathers around the home is another traditional method believed to discourage lizards.

The practice is based on the belief that lizards associate peacock feathers with their natural predators. However, there is limited scientific evidence to support the effectiveness of this method.
