WAFCON 2026: Cameroon end title drought, crush Malawi to lift trophy

Kurt Okraku stood composed as he placed medals on players, sharing smiles to mark the occasion. His role at CAF continues to place him among leading figures in African football.

The Indomitable Lionesses had previously lost finals to Nigeria in 2004, 2014, and 2016, enduring repeated disappointment on the continental stage. This time, however, Cameroon made no mistake. Ten years after losing the 2016 final on home soil, they finally reached the summit of African women’s football.

Malawi’s remarkable debut WAFCON campaign ended in defeat, but reaching the final was a major achievement for the Scorchers.

Cameroon’s victory also made them only the fourth nation to win the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, joining Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea, and South Africa.
