Minority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has said illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, will be carefully considered in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) campaign ahead of the 2028 general elections.
He said the party would make the destruction of Ghana’s water bodies a central part of its campaign, arguing that the impact of illegal mining goes beyond partisan politics.
Annoh-Dompreh made the remarks during an interview on Channel One Tv on Saturday, August 15, 2026, he said the destruction of water bodies, particularly the Birim River, threatens the livelihoods and survival of Ghanaians.

“Galamsey will form the core of the narrative of our campaign in 2028,” he said.
He explained that the NPP’s decision to focus on illegal mining would not be driven solely by political considerations or the fact that the NDC had previously campaigned on the issue.
“Water is life. If today the Birim River is destroyed and we can’t even get water, we need to talk about it,” he said.
He further added that the fight against illegal mining should be treated as a national concern because of its effects on water resources and livelihoods.
“It is not just about campaign. It’s about survival, it’s about livelihood, it’s about humanity,” he added.
