Heavy police presence has been deployed at various voting centres as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) holds its regional executive elections across the country.
The security deployment forms part of arrangements to maintain order and ensure a peaceful voting process as delegates elect new regional executives to lead the party ahead of the 2028 general election.
NPP elects regional executives across 16 regions
Under the party’s guidelines, security activities for the elections rest exclusively with the Ghana Police Service.
Access beyond designated security perimeters has also been restricted to delegates, members of the Regional Elections Committee, contestants and their accredited agents.
The Regional Elections Committee is responsible for supervising the exercise, while the Electoral Commission (EC) is conducting the elections and has full responsibility for ensuring that the polls are transparent, free and fair.
The elections are being held in 15 regions on Saturday, August 15, with the Western North Region scheduled to hold its elections on Sunday, August 16.
The exercise is part of the NPP’s internal reorganisation as the party seeks to rebuild its structures and strengthen its grassroots base following its defeat in the 2024 general election.
The regional elections are expected to determine the leadership teams that will oversee the party’s activities and mobilisation at the regional level ahead of the 2028 elections.
Among the positions being contested are regional chairman, first and second vice-chairmen, secretary, deputy secretary, treasurer, organiser, women’s organiser, youth organiser, Nasara organiser, communications officer and Persons with Disability (PWD) coordinator.
The party has also introduced measures to regulate activities at the polling centres.
Delegates are not expected to congregate at the voting centres and will instead walk in individually to cast their ballots.
Party executives will not be allowed to address delegates on election day, while delegates will not be escorted to the voting screen except in cases involving persons with mobility challenges and with the consent of the Electoral Commission.
The elections have generated significant interest, with several prominent party figures contesting for regional leadership positions.
In the Ashanti Region, Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, popularly known as COKA, and former Environmental Protection Agency Chief Executive Officer Dr Henry Kwabena Kokofu are among those contesting the regional chairmanship position.
In the Greater Accra Region, former Ledzokuku Member of Parliament Dr Bernard Okoe-Boye is also contesting for a regional leadership position.
The outcome of the elections is expected to influence the NPP’s preparations for its national executive elections scheduled for October 3, 2026, and its broader strategy towards the 2028 general election.
The party has urged all contestants, delegates and supporters to comply with the electoral guidelines and allow the process to proceed peacefully.
