Some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region have held a vigil for their incarcerated Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako.
Chairman Wontumi, as he is affectionately called, was sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment with hard labour over his Sambroboi illegal mining case.
Lawyers of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP have since appealed the imprisonment and are hopeful of a good outcome.
The National Party has described Chairman Wontumi as a political prisoner and insists that he was jailed not for committing a crime but because he is the Ashanti Regional chairman of the NPP.
At the vigil, they called on the president to have mercy on their regional chairman and release him.
Members of the NPP and sympathizers of Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, prayed fervently during the vigil, to call on God to intervene and secure his freedom following his 20-year prison sentence.
