Some social media users are livid over reports that Desmond Offei has emerged as a leading internal candidate to take over as head coach of the Black Stars if the Ghana Football Association (GFA) decides against extending Carlos Queiroz’s contract.

Queiroz, who signed a four-month deal in April 2026, is expected to leave the position when his contract expires in August 2026, unless an extension is agreed.

The Portuguese coach guided Ghana to the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but negotiations over a new deal have reportedly stalled amid disagreements over his demands.

Offei is considered a strong option because of his familiarity with the current squad and the wider national-team setup. He currently serves as Queiroz’s assistant, having previously worked in the same capacity under former Black Stars coach Otto Addo.

However, the report has been met with vehement backlash from football fans on social media, who argue that Offei is not experienced enough to take on such a major role.

Some stated that Offei accepting the role, if offered by the GFA, would be a huge risk that could jeopardize his coaching career if things go wrong.

Others slammed the GFA for even considering such a decision, insisting that the nation needs a top-class manager to lead the team into the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), not an upcoming coach.

There were also concerns that Offei has not excelled with the junior national teams he has managed so far, and that the Black Stars would present far greater challenges.
