Former professional boxer Prichard Colon has died at the age of 33, nearly 11 years after suffering a devastating brain injury during a bout that changed his life.
Colon’s father, Richard Colon, announced his son’s death on Thursday, August 13, 2026, in a social media post, asking those who had supported the family over the years to continue keeping them in their prayers.
“I regret to inform you of the passing of my son Prichard from this earthly world. He is now in a better place,” Richard wrote.
Born in Puerto Rico, Colon was regarded as one of boxing’s promising young talents.
The super welterweight had built an unbeaten record through his first 16 professional fights before facing Terrel Williams in a 2015 bout in Virginia.
Colon was reportedly the favourite heading into the contest, but the fight ended with him suffering a serious brain injury.
He repeatedly complained about blows to the back of his head during the bout, according to reports.
After returning to his dressing room, Colon began experiencing alarming symptoms and was taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where doctors performed emergency surgery to relieve pressure on his brain.
He subsequently spent more than 200 days in a coma and was left with severe, permanent disabilities that required continuous care.
Reflecting on his son’s life, Richard said he had done everything he could to fulfil Colon’s wishes, including hoping to take him on holiday to Puerto Rico.
“I did everything possible to fulfill his wish, his dream of bringing him on vacation to Puerto Rico as much as he desired, but couldn’t. Thank you for so many years of love and prayers. As much as you can, please keep us in your prayers,” he said.
