The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has disclosed that the evacuation of more than 1,600 Ghanaians from South Africa since May 2026 was fully financed by the Government of Ghana and its local partners.

The Ministry made this known in a statement dated August 13, 2026, in response to reports that the South African government was seeking reimbursement from some African countries for costs incurred in evacuating foreign nationals.

“The evacuation of all our compatriots was fully funded by the Government of Ghana and our Ghanaian partners,” the Ministry stated.

It stressed that Ghana did not seek financial or material assistance from South Africa to bring its citizens home.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Ghana did not seek any financial or material support from the South African Government to bring our fellow nationals back home,” it noted.

The Ministry said the latest round of evacuations had also followed the same principle, with the Ghanaian government and its partners bearing the entire cost.

It further disclosed that evacuees are provided with reintegration funds, transport fares and other relief items upon arrival to support their smooth reintegration.

The Ministry therefore assured Ghanaians that the country would not be among those asked by South Africa to reimburse the cost of repatriating foreign nationals.

“Ghanaians can therefore be assured that under no circumstances will Ghana be listed among the countries being requested by the Government of South Africa to reimburse the cost incurred in repatriating foreign nationals,” the statement said.

The Ministry reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting the lives and welfare of Ghanaians abroad, regardless of the cost involved.
