Ghanaian 400m sensation Godfred Opoku has taken another major step in his athletics career after joining the University of Illinois Track and Field team to begin his collegiate journey.

The 18-year-old sprinter arrives in the United States after making a strong impression on the international stage, finishing fourth in the men’s 400m final at the 2026 World Athletics U20 Championships in Oregon.

Opoku produced a composed campaign at the championships, winning his opening heat in 46.05 seconds before advancing to the final, where he clocked 45.56 seconds to finish just outside the medal positions.

His performances have underlined his potential as one of Ghana’s emerging quarter-milers, and his move to Illinois now presents an opportunity to develop that potential within the American collegiate system.

Opoku is a graduate of Okomfo Anokye Senior High School, an institution that has continued to produce notable Ghanaian athletes.

His move to Illinois also follows in the footsteps of another Ghanaianhigh jumper, Rose Yeboah, who has also built her athletics career in the United States.

The transition will expose Opoku to a different level of training, competition and facilities as he begins life as a collegiate athlete.

At just 18, Opoku already has the experience of competing on a global stage, and his fourth-place finish at the U20 World Championships suggests there is plenty more to come.
