Director of Communications for the United Party, Solomon Owusu, has warned Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin that future generations could hold him accountable if the controversial Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill widely known as the anti-LGBTQ+ bill, is not signed into law.

Speaking on TV3 on August 13, 2026, he argued that the debate over the legislation should not be viewed as a victory for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He further warned that the decision on the bill could have consequences for those currently involved in determining its passage and assent.

“The NPP has not been vindicated on any LGBTQ+ matter. If there is anybody that has to be accused of the LGBT+ bill having not being signed, it is Speaker Bagbin.

".. Children of this country will one day accuse Speaker Bagbin of the LGBTQ+ Bill if it is not signed,” Owusu stated.

Parliament passed the bill on May 29, 2026. The legislation imposes a three-year prison sentence for same-sex sexual relations and up to five years for funding, sponsoring, or promoting LGBTQ+ activities.

However, Bagbin has directed Parliament to review and refine the bill following procedural concerns and debates over its sentencing framework.

Bagbin maintains that the bill is a collective national interest matter rather than a partisan issue.
