The National President of the Mobile Money Advocacy Group Ghana (MoMAG), Edward Ofori Agyemang, has called for stronger capacity building, protection and professional development of mobile money agents, describing them as the “last mile of financial inclusion” in Ghana.

Speaking at the maiden MoMAG/Telecel Capacity Building Forum on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, Ofori Agyemang said that more than 400,000 mobile money agents operating across the country play a critical role in connecting millions of Ghanaians to financial services, particularly in communities with limited access to traditional banking.

He explained that mobile money agents provide access to cash, facilitate payments, support businesses, and contribute significantly to Ghana’s digital economy.

According to him, the growing demands of Ghana’s digital financial landscape make it necessary for agents to continuously upgrade their skills, particularly in regulatory compliance, fraud prevention, cybersecurity, customer service, and sustainable business growth.

"Today, over 400,000 Mobile Money Agents are serving as the physical branches of Electronic Money Issuers across the country. They are the last mile of financial inclusion.

"Without a well-trained, well-supported, and well-protected agent network, cash-in and cash-out services become inefficient, customer confidence declines, and the goal of financial inclusion becomes harder and harder to accomplish," he said.

He said the maiden forum, organised in partnership with Telecel Ghana, was intended to equip agents with the knowledge, skills and regulatory awareness needed to operate effectively in an increasingly complex financial services environment.

The initiative was held under the theme “Amplifying the Impact: Building a Safe, Trusted and Profitable Agent Network.”

Ofori Agyemang warned that without a well-trained, well-supported and well-protected agent network, cash-in and cash-out services could become inefficient, customer confidence could decline and Ghana’s financial inclusion goals could become increasingly difficult to achieve.

“The forum therefore sought to build an agent network that is secure, compliant, customer-focused, resilient and financially sustainable, while strengthening collaboration among agents, regulators, financial institutions, telecommunications companies and other industry stakeholders,” he shared.

Ofori Agyemang further expressed appreciation to Telecel Ghana, particularly its CEO Ing. Patricia Obo-Nai, for partnering with MoMAG to organise the forum. He also acknowledged the Bank of Ghana, Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications, Ghana Police Service, Enterprise Insurance, Direct Savings and Loans and MoMAG Patron Joseph Smith-Acquah for supporting the development of mobile money agents.

He urged agents attending the forum to apply the knowledge gained to improve their businesses and customer service, stressing the need for a stronger and more professional agent network capable of driving financial inclusion and national development.

Other participants included Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications CEO Sylvia Owusu-Ankomah, BoG FinTech and Innovation representative Cornelia Sampson, Enterprise Insurance Assistant General Manager Paul Ampadu-Yeboah, Ghana Police Service Cybercrime Director Chief Superintendent Eric Gyebi and Direct Savings and Loans CEO Francis Ackon.
