Majority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has disclosed that former Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga wanted a ministerial appointment.

Speaking on Okay FM’s Ade Akye Abia on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, Dafeamekpor explained that Ayariga’s decision to move to the Executive was not because of poor performance in Parliament.

He described Ayariga as one of the most effective leaders he had worked under, stressing that the former Majority Leader had personally expressed interest in serving in the Executive.

“He is the one who wants to serve in the Executive. He is going to serve in one of the most important ministries in the country,” Dafeamekpor said.

He explained that once Ayariga accepted the ministerial appointment, there was a need for a replacement to lead the Majority Caucus in Parliament.

“That is why James Agalga was appointed to take over as the Majority Leader. Agalga is as good as the one who is going,” he indicated.

Dafeamekpor therefore rejected suggestions that Ayariga’s replacement was necessitated by concerns about his effectiveness as Majority Leader, insisting that the change was linked to his decision to serve in government.
