The Bui Power Authority (BPA) has been urged to prioritise battery-backed renewable energy solutions to help meet Ghana’s rising evening electricity demand.
Speaking at the Authority’s annual stakeholders’ meeting in Accra, the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Jinapor, said expanding battery energy storage capacity would allow excess power generated during the day, particularly from renewable sources, to be stored and supplied during peak evening hours.
Dr Jinapor said battery-backed renewable energy systems offered a practical solution to some of Ghana’s electricity challenges.
“The difference between the off-peak and the peak, which is in the night, is that it can rise to as much as 700 megawatts. So, if we don’t close that gap, what it means is that in the night, we’ll produce 700 megawatts and by daytime, that 700 megawatts become idle capacity that we have to pay for,” he said.
He added: “But if we can improve on battery-backed energy, we’ll use the daytime to store that power with the batteries. Then in the evening, we’ll be feeding about five hours of continuous energy.”
Dr Jinapor also encouraged state-owned energy sector agencies to prioritise their expenditure and invest in areas that directly benefit the sector.
The Chief Executive of BPA, Kow Eduakwa Sam, said the increase in solar generation had strengthened the Authority’s position as a leader in Ghana’s renewable energy sector.
He said despite prevailing cash flow constraints, BPA had continued to expand its solar business, increasing its operational solar capacity by 50 megawatts.
“Hydropower remained the Authority’s principal generation asset, contributing 97 percent of our total generation for the year. Recognising the importance of hydropower, we also had significant development in our new hydro projects on the Tano, Pra, and Ankobra rivers.”
He said BPA had also continued to invest in infrastructure and digital transformation to support its operations and future growth.
A board member of BPA, Alhaji Mohammed Kwaku Doku, said the Authority’s performance in 2025 reflected the commitment of its board, management and staff.
“Our performance in 2025 reflects not only the strength of our institutional framework, but also the dedication of the Board, management, and staff in navigating uncertainties while actively maintaining efficiency and effectiveness in service delivery,” he said.
According to BPA’s 2025 Annual Report presented at the annual stakeholders’ meeting, the Authority recorded a strong financial performance, posting a net profit of $66.2 million from power production.
The Authority generated $145.8 million in revenue, recording a net profit margin of 45.4%, significantly above its target of 20.5%.
The report also highlighted growth in BPA’s renewable energy portfolio, with solar generation capacity increasing from 55 megawatts peak to 105 megawatts peak following the completion of additional solar infrastructure.
In 2026, BPA plans to focus on proactive plant maintenance, system optimisation and renewable energy expansion.
The Authority is also expected to add about 100 megawatts of solar capacity, increasing its operational solar capacity to 205 megawatts peak.
To further support Ghana’s green transition agenda, BPA plans to develop 300 megawatts peak of dispatchable solar photovoltaic plants through the integration of large-scale battery energy storage systems.
The projects are expected to be completed by the end of 2028.
