The government is targeting GH¢100 million by the end of 2028 to support agricultural education and training in Ghana, the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has announced.

Speaking at the launch of the Ghana Agricultural Fund for Education and Transformation (GAFET) on August 11, 2026, the Minister said GH¢3.5 million had already been mobilised as initial seed funding for the initiative.

He said the Fund’s immediate target is to raise GH¢10 million by December 2026 and grow the Fund to GH¢100 million by the end of 2028.

“These are bold targets, but they are achievable,” the Minister said, urging stakeholders to treat agricultural education as a shared national responsibility.

Opoku stressed that the Fund must be managed transparently to maintain the confidence of contributors.

He said contributors must be assured that their resources would be professionally managed, properly accounted for and used to address clearly identified needs within agricultural education institutions.

The proposed management framework will include a governing board, an independent fund administrator or technical adviser, the Securities and Exchange Commission, a licensed fund manager, a custodian bank and an independent external auditor.

Contributions will be kept in a dedicated custodian account, while investments will be guided by an approved investment policy focused on capital preservation and sustainable returns.

The Minister said funding decisions would be based on clearly identified institutional needs and supported by regular audits, reporting and impact assessments.

The Fund is expected to support agricultural colleges, as well as universities, technical institutions, research and training centres and other institutions responsible for developing the professionals and technical expertise needed to transform Ghana’s agricultural sector.
