The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP) has engaged Amnesty International Ghana on the progress of the Anti-Witchcraft Accusations Bill and measures to strengthen the protection of persons affected by witchcraft accusations.

The Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, held discussions with a delegation from Amnesty International Ghana led by its Director, Hannah Osei.

The meeting focused on the progress of the Bill and opportunities for collaboration to safeguard the rights, dignity and well-being of persons subjected to witchcraft accusations.

During the engagement, Osei commended the Ministry for its efforts to advance gender equality and social protection.

She reaffirmed Amnesty International Ghana’s commitment to supporting advocacy for the passage of the Bill and appealed to the Ministry to continue working with the Attorney General’s Department and other relevant stakeholders to facilitate its progress.

According to her, reintroducing the legislation as government-sponsored legislation would help address some of the challenges that prevented its earlier enactment.

The Bill seeks to strengthen legal protection for persons affected by witchcraft accusations and address practices that expose vulnerable individuals to abuse and discrimination.

Dr Lartey welcomed Amnesty International Ghana’s continued partnership and reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to protecting vulnerable persons through stronger legal and policy measures.

She said the Bill was progressing through the required processes, adding that proposed amendments to the Criminal Offences Act were currently before the Attorney General’s Department.

Dr Lartey said the Ministry would continue to work with relevant stakeholders to advance measures aimed at protecting the rights and welfare of persons affected by witchcraft accusations.

The meeting also explored opportunities for continued collaboration between the Ministry and Amnesty International Ghana to strengthen advocacy and protection mechanisms for affected persons.
