Security analyst Farouk Al-Wahab has claimed that the late former President Jerry John Rawlings was shocked and also pained after discovering that the 1992 Constitution he signed barred him from contesting another presidential election after serving two terms.

In an interview with Accra-based United Television and shared on X on August 11, 2026, Al-Wahab claimed that Rawlings confided in him two years before his death that he would not have signed the Constitution had he known it restricted him to an eight‑year tenure.

“Two years before his demise, he told me that if he had known things would turn out this way, he would not have signed the Constitution, because he did not realise that the eight‑year limit meant he could not return as president," he disclosed.

Al-Wahab also revealed in the interview that the late president placed his trust in DF Annan before signing the 1992 Constitution.

He said Rawlings sought assurance from Annan about the document’s contents and, upon receiving a response, made a declaration of commitment.

"Rawlings also added that the only person he trusted at the time was DF Annan. Before signing, he asked Annan if he had read through it, and when Annan responded, Rawlings declared, ‘I will sign with my blood,’” he added.

Al-Wahab further claimed that Rawlings only realised the full implications of the constitutional provision after President John Agyekum Kufuor assumed office, at which point he became furious and agitated — but by then, it was too late.
