Some transport operators in parts of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region have increased transport fares by 23 percent.

Commercial drivers are now charging 8 cedis from Sofoline to Kronom instead of the previous 6 cedis 50 pesewas.

Transport fare from Sofoline to Suame has also increased from 4 cedis 50 pesewas to 6 cedis.

The increase which took effect on Monday has since caused an uproar among many passengers.

OTEC News Reporter, Kwame Agyenim Boateng, who visited some transport terminals on Tuesday, said this was not an isolated case as many other routes have also seen fare hikes.

The commercial drivers attributed the increment to the high cost of fuel, spare parts, and other operational variables.

Meanwhile, passengers are calling on the Transport Ministry to come out and explain how the increment took effect without any prior announcement.

They have expressed worry over what they describe as a unilateral decision by commercial operators to increase fares.
