A Ghana Premier League title race is rarely won by one player, but there are always individuals whose performances can tilt the balance when the season reaches its defining moments.

With the 2026/27 campaign approaching, the battle for the title promises to be fiercely contested, with defending champions Medeama looking to retain their crown while Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko will be among the clubs expected to challenge.

Here are five players who could have a major say in where the trophy ends up.

Benjamin Asare – Hearts of Oak

For Hearts of Oak, few players carry as much responsibility as Benjamin Asare.

The goalkeeper returns to domestic football after a remarkable World Cup with Ghana and has already promised to raise his level for the new season.

His ability to turn draws into wins by producing crucial saves could prove decisive in a tight title race.

Hearts will need defensive consistency if they are to sustain a title challenge, and Asare could once again be the foundation of that backline.

Augustine Okrah – Bechem United

Goals win titles, and Augustine Okrah showed last season that he knows where the net is.

The Bechem United forward finished the 2025/26 campaign among the league’s leading scorers, ending the season with 17 goals.

If Bechem are to move from being outsiders to genuine title contenders, Okrah will have to maintain that scoring touch.

Even if his team does not dominate possession, his ability to turn limited chances into goals could make the difference in the tight games.

Emmanuel Annor – Medeama

Medeama’s title defence has already brought a significant change to their attack.

The champions have signed Emmanuel Annor from Nations FC after he scored nine league goals during the 2025/26 campaign.

His pace, creativity and versatility are expected to give Medeama another attacking dimension.

Medeama have lost several important players during the off-season, meaning Annor’s ability to settle quickly could be crucial as they attempt to defend their crown while also competing in Africa.

Kelvin Oppong – Bibiani Gold Stars

Gold Stars do not need to look too far back to remember what it takes to win the Ghana Premier League.

They lifted their first-ever title in 2024/25, but their defence was a major concern last season as they conceded 40 goals in 34 matches.

That is where Kelvin Oppong comes in.

The defender was part of the historic title-winning side and even got on the scoresheet in the 4–0 victory over Accra Lions that confirmed Gold Stars as champions.

If Oppong can take greater command of the backline and help Gold Stars become more difficult to break down, the Miners could turn themselves into genuine title contenders again.

They finished just two points behind Medeama last season, so the gap is hardly insurmountable.
