The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has intensified investigations into Ghanaian officials linked to the bribery case involving former Goldman Sachs banker and former Managing Director of the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), Asante Kwaku Berko.

EOCO said in a statement on Monday, August 10, 2026, that it began working on the case last year after receiving a request from US authorities for information on Ghanaian individuals allegedly connected to the case.

The individuals include a former Minister of State and other public officials.

Berko was recently convicted in the United States for conspiring to pay more than $1 million in bribes to Ghanaian government officials.

The alleged bribes were linked to the development and financing of a power plant involving Turkish energy company Aksa Enerji.

EOCO said it had taken a cautious approach while the US case was ongoing and waited for evidence from the trial to help guide its own investigation.

Following Berko’s conviction, the Attorney-General has contacted US authorities to obtain documents and other evidence through legal channels.

EOCO said it would now intensify its investigation, including tracing the money involved, identifying those who may have benefited and examining possible assets linked to the case.

“Asset tracing and recovery form an integral part of EOCO’s investigative plan in this matter,” the statement read.

However, EOCO stressed that Berko’s conviction does not automatically mean that any Ghanaian official mentioned in the case is guilty.

It said each individual would be investigated separately and that any action taken would be based on the evidence and Ghanaian law.

The development follows an earlier disclosure by the Office of the Special Prosecutor that it assisted the FBI with the investigation that led to Berko’s conviction.

EOCO said it would not release details that could prejudice the ongoing investigation or any potential prosecutions.
