The spokesperson for the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu, has called for the prosecution of an Islamic cleric whose viral video contained remarks inciting violence against those who insult the Prophet Muhammad.

Speaking on Ahenfie TV and sighted by GhanaWeb on August 10, 2026, Sheikh Shaibu described the cleric as a threat to the peace and security of the country.

He stressed that the cleric’s subsequent apology was insufficient and insisted that he must be invited for questioning by the authorities.

“His comments are deeply disturbing, and I cannot understand the stance from which he made such distasteful remarks when Ghana enjoys so much peace. This poses a threat to our national security and harmony, especially since even the Chief Imam has condemned it.

"Though he has apologised, that alone is not enough, as people may already have been incited. The IGP must therefore invite him to explain why he made such statements, which run contrary to the teachings of the Quran,” he said.

The comments follow viral video in which Sheikh Masud Abdullahi, associated with Masjidu Da’awatun Nabawiyya in Atwima Nwabiagya North (Ntensere) in the Ashanti Region is heard making remarks deemed as hate speech.

In the footage, the cleric is heard telling followers that anyone who calls Prophet Muhammad a false prophet should be beheaded, claiming such an act would not be a crime and would lead to paradise.

Sheikh Abdullahi later issued a public apology, saying the remarks were made out of anger while teaching Islamic law and asking Ghanaians for forgiveness. Sheikh Shaibu, who also serves on the National Peace Council, rejected the apology as inadequate.

Meanwhile, public reactions on social media have included calls for swift action by the Ghana Police Service against inflammatory religious rhetoric, with many stressing the need for consistent enforcement of laws against incitement.
