The Director-General of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), Alexander Obeng, has warned drivers and transport operators against increasing fares beyond the rates agreed upon with the Ministry of Transport.

Speaking on Police TV, Obeng said drivers and transport operators would henceforth agree with the Ministry on new fares whenever adjustments were necessary, after which the approved fares would be communicated to the public.

He warned that drivers who disregard the agreement and add their own margins could be prosecuted for overcharging under Regulation 180(1)(i).

He said that while there was previously no specific law addressing the practice, enforcement would now be strict.

“Enforcement has begun,” he said.

Obeng urged drivers to comply with the regulation and refrain from using weather conditions and other factors as reasons to arbitrarily increase fares.

He also encouraged passengers who are overcharged to report the matter to the police.

“If there’s a police station or police officer nearby, report the issue to them and give them the car number.”

He urged passengers to be patient after lodging complaints, noting that investigations could take time.

“Crime has no expiry. Investigators will work and go arrest him,” he said.

Obeng issued a strong warning to drivers who continue to flout the regulation.

“Overcharging is over. Don’t do it. If you go ahead and disregard this law, you’ll be dealt with. Don’t then come and cry to anyone.”
