A chilling alleged plot to assassinate Lionel Messi during the 2026 FIFA World Cup has been uncovered following the release of a US police security dossier detailing threats made against the Argentina captain.

According to reports based on the leaked documents, Messi was the player who received the most serious threats during the tournament, with one alleged plot involving a planned armed attack and homemade explosives.

The first incident reportedly occurred before Argentina’s group-stage meeting with Jordan in Dallas. A man allegedly called Dallas airport and threatened to enter the stadium with two other people carrying weapons and homemade bombs. Messi was specifically mentioned as a target.

The threat triggered a security response ahead of the match, with authorities taking precautions to protect players and spectators.

The alleged threats resurfaced before Argentina’s Round of 16 clash against Egypt in Atlanta. According to the reported police files, a separate suspect allegedly threatened to enter the stadium and carry out a suicide bombing targeting Messi.

Security officials also investigated another bomb threat linked to the Argentina-Egypt fixture after claims that explosives had been placed inside stadium bins. The stadium was searched with explosive-detection dogs, but no devices were discovered, with authorities ultimately determining that the threat was a false alarm.

Despite the disturbing threats, Messi continued to play a central role in Argentina’s World Cup campaign.

He scored in Argentina’s dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over Egypt, helping the defending champions recover from two goals down to reach the quarter-finals.
