Former Defence Minister and Bimbilla MP, Dominic Nitiwul, has dismissed speculation that Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings was ever a serious contender for the Defence Ministry.

Speaking in an interview on Channel One TV on Friday, August 7, Nitiwul explained that internal signals within government circles had long pointed to Adjei as the likely choice.

“She stood no chance at all, especially from the last month of July when information started coming. The information we kept getting was that she still had no chance at all,” he noted.

According to him, Zanetor’s prospects were always stronger in ministries outside Defence, particularly the Environment Ministry, where she has now been placed.

He added that Adjei had been considered for the Defence role since the early stages of the administration, making his appointment unsurprising.

Nitiwul stressed that the final decision was ultimately the President’s prerogative, urging Ghanaians to judge the new Defence Minister by his performance.

“Ultimately, the President is the one who decides, and he has decided this is what I want, and we all move on with it. Let’s see how the performance will go but it’s a tough job for him,” he said.

His remarks come in the wake of President John Dramani Mahama’s latest ministerial reshuffle, which saw Zanetor nominated as Minister-designate for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, while Kenneth Gilbert Adjei was tapped for the Defence portfolio.
