The Deputy Women’s Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Abigail Elorm Mensah, has condemned Minority Leader Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin’s alleged description of Presidential Staffer Nana Yaa Jantuah as a “nobody” during the presentation of a petition at the Presidency following the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration.

In a post shared on Facebook on August 7, 2026, Elorm Mensah said the comments were not only an attack on Nana Yaa Jantuah but also a slight against women who continue to contribute to Ghana’s governance and public service.

She argued that the remarks reflected a “clear sense of gender superiority” and questioned whether they suggested that women were not qualified to occupy key public positions.

“His description of Nana Yaa Jantuah, a senior government official, as a ‘nobody’ and an ‘unmatched personality’ is not only disrespectful to her as an individual but also an insult to all women who continue to serve this country with competence and dedication,” she said.

Elorm Mensah insisted that Nana Yaa Jantuah holds a position at the Presidency and deserves the same respect accorded to any public official.

"I find it extremely troubling that the Minority Leader would suggest that a woman is unfit to receive a petition simply because of her gender. This posture reflects a clear sense of gender superiority and exposes a mindset that seeks to sideline women from positions of authority and influence.

"Nana Yaa Jantuah holds a legitimate and respected role at the Presidency. To dismiss her on the basis of gender is to undermine the principles of merit, professionalism, and equality that our nation must uphold," she wrote.

The Deputy Women’s Organiser of the NDC also challenged the NPP to state its stance on gender equality and demanded an immediate and unreserved apology from the Minority Leader to Nana Yaa Jantuah and Ghanaian women.

"I call on the Minority Leader to issue an immediate and unreserved apology to Nana Yaa Jantuah and to all Ghanaian women. I also urge the leadership of the NPP to clearly state their position on gender equality and to disassociate themselves from such discriminatory and demeaning remarks."

She reaffirmed her commitment to advocating for the dignity, inclusion and participation of women in governance.
