Manchester City have turned down an opening bid of £38.5 million from Barcelona for midfielder Rodri, with the Premier League champions reportedly prepared to consider his departure only if their valuation of more than £60 million is met.

The Spain international, 30, is entering the final year of his contract at the Etihad Stadium and has yet to agree an extension, increasing uncertainty over his future.

Barcelona have emerged as the leading contenders for his signature after receiving approval from the player to begin discussions with City.

The Catalan club are understood to have held talks with Rodri's representatives before submitting their first formal offer on Friday.

Real Madrid had previously appeared to be the midfielder's preferred destination, but talks between the two parties have now ended.

Spanish radio network Cadena Ser reported that Madrid made what it described as an "irresistible" proposal to Rodri shortly after Spain's World Cup triumph.

According to the report, Real Madrid's hierarchy, including president Florentino Perez and chief executive Jose Angel Sanchez, made significant efforts to convince the midfielder.

However, Rodri ultimately decided to accept another proposal, with Madrid informed of his decision on Friday.

City are keen to resolve his future quickly as they look for a replacement.

They are negotiating with Lille for 18-year-old Morocco midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi, although the French club's £86 million valuation remains a major obstacle.
