President John Dramani Mahama has stressed the need for stronger institutions, improved safety systems and responsible leadership following the tragic helicopter crash.

Speaking at a memorial service to mark the one anniversary of the tragedy on August 6, 2026, President Mahama said the loss should remind leaders that every decision taken in public office has consequences for human lives.

He said the tragedy must push the country to strengthen systems that protect those who serve the nation, particularly personnel whose duties place them in challenging and risky situations.

“Today should also be a moment of reflection for all of us who are entrusted with leadership, that every decision we make affects lives. Every public office is ultimately a sacred trust,” President Mahama said.

According to him, leadership should not only be measured by the authority held by public officials but by the responsibility they carry towards the welfare and safety of citizens.

He said the memory of those who died places an obligation on the country to improve safety standards, invest in the welfare of personnel and ensure that institutions are equipped to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

“The greatest memorial we can build is not one made of stone or bronze, it is one that is built through responsible leadership, improved systems and steadfast commitment to protecting those who dedicate their lives to Ghana,” he added.

The anniversary of the crash, he noted, should therefore serve as a reminder that national tragedies must lead to meaningful reforms rather than being remembered only through ceremonies.


The August 6, 2025, crash claimed the lives of Defence Minister Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Environment, Science and Technology Minister Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, security officials and Ghana Air Force personnel who were on official assignment linked to efforts to combat illegal mining.
