The Western Central Regional Police Command has commenced investigations into an explosion at a tailings site in Aboso near Tarkwa that claimed the lives of three people and left three others injured.

According to a report by citinewsroom.com on August 5, 2026, the Police said the Minerals Commission has been notified and is working with investigators to determine what caused the explosion.

"The Minerals Commission has been notified and is collaborating with the Police as investigations continue to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident," the report said.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, with the three injured victims currently receiving medical treatment.

According to preliminary police investigations, workers at the site spotted a python and informed the owner of the facility, David Kofi Fletcher, who was among those killed in the explosion.

Police said Fletcher reportedly arrived at the site carrying a pump-action shotgun to kill the reptile.

Investigators suspect that after firing a shot, the pellets struck explosive materials believed to have been illegally stored on the premises, triggering the deadly blast.

The explosion claimed three lives, injured three others and caused extensive damage to nearby properties.

Several houses had their window panes shattered, while six vehicles parked at a nearby washing bay suffered damaged windscreens and windows due to the impact.

The bodies of the deceased have since been conveyed to the morgue as investigations continue.

The Police also used the opportunity to caution the public against the illegal possession and storage of explosives.

"The Command further reminds the public that the unlawful possession, storage, handling, or sale of explosives constitutes a serious offence and poses significant risks to public safety. Members of the public are urged to report any suspected illegal storage or handling of explosives to the nearest Police Station," the report noted.

The Western Central Regional Police Command further expressed its condolences to the bereaved families while investigations continue to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
