Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has called on Ghanaians to assess the performance of President John Dramani Mahama’s administration using economic data rather than political rhetoric.

Speaking in an interview on GTV on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, he said measurable indicators such as inflation, the exchange rate and the country’s debt position provided a more accurate basis for evaluating the government’s performance since assuming office.

“We should do comparative analysis which is evidence-based,” he said.

He further argued that President Mahama inherited an economy facing severe macroeconomic challenges but had since overseen improvements in key economic indicators.

Maintaining that these indicators reflected the government’s performance, the Education Minister questioned the state of the economy at the end of the previous administration.

“What was the level of inflation as of December 2024?… What was the exchange rate of the cedi against the dollar?… Today we have seen some stability in the foreign currency regime and its management,” he stated.

Iddrisu further said Ghana’s debt situation had also improved under the current administration, noting that the country was previously classified as being in high debt distress but had since made progress towards economic stability.

He urged the public to rely on verifiable economic data when comparing the records of the Mahama and Akufo-Addo administrations instead of partisan arguments.
