The Ministry of Defence, in partnership with the Pope John Old Boys Association (POJOBA), has inaugurated the maiden Annual Public Lecture in memory of the late Honourable Dr (Med) Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, celebrating his distinguished service to Ghana and his enduring legacy of selfless leadership.

The event, held at Burma Hall on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, drew a high-profile audience, including Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, who graced the occasion as Special Guest of Honour.

Ministers of State, government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, the Chief of Defence Staff, Lt Gen William Agyapong, service chiefs, traditional rulers, family of the late Dr Omane Boamah, POJOBA members, and other dignitaries were also in attendance.

Opening the lecture, Acting Defence Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson said the initiative was designed to honour a leader who served Ghana with integrity and conviction.

He praised Dr Omane Boamah’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of officers and soldiers of the Ghana Armed Forces, noting that his example would continue to inspire future generations.

"We celebrate and honour the life of a dedicated leader who served with integrity," gafonline.mil.gh quoted Dr Forson as saying, adding that the late minister's passion for national service and concern for military personnel would continue to inspire future generations of public servants.

Chairing the occasion, Dr Emmanuel Adu-Sarkodee, President of the Ghana Employers’ Association and Akwamu Manwerehene described the late minister as fiercely patriotic and devoted to Ghana’s progress.

He commended the collaboration between the government, the Armed Forces, and POJOBA in instituting the lecture, expressing confidence that it would preserve Dr Omane Boamah’s legacy for posterity.

The programme featured presentations by distinguished speakers reflecting on the late minister’s values and addressing contemporary national issues.

Parish Priest of Christ the King, Very Rev Dr Ebenezer Akesseh, speaking on the theme “Selfless Leadership in Public Service: Lessons from the Life and Legacy of Dr Omane Boamah,” highlighted humility as one of his most defining qualities, urging leaders to serve with integrity and an unwavering commitment to the common good.

Another keynote speaker, Professor Kwasi Appeaning Addo, former Director of the Institute for Environment and Sanitation Studies, delivered a lecture titled “Accra Beyond the Floods: Rethinking Enforcement, Urban Planning and Community Resilience.”

He described Dr Omane Boamah as an environmental advocate who recognised the importance of sustainable development, and called for a united approach involving policymakers, traditional authorities, civil society, and citizens to strengthen urban resilience.

He further urged Ghanaians to adopt responsible environmental practices, stressing that indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drains and waterways must end to prevent perennial flooding.
