Environmental advocate Gabriel Nii Kommey Adams has called for greater investment in girls' education, science and innovation, arguing that Africa cannot achieve a sustainable future while excluding women from science, technology and environmental leadership.

Delivering a speech at the Environmental Education and Lifelong Learning Conference organised by the Pan African Centre for Climate Policy (PACCP), Adams said Africa's response to climate change and environmental degradation must be driven by education, innovation and equal opportunities for girls.

"Africa's green future is already present in the dreams, intelligence and creativity of its girls. Our responsibility is to unlock it," he said.

Speaking on the theme "Unlocking Africa's Green Future: The Power of Girls in STEM, Environmental Stewardship and Social Innovation," Adams noted that although Africa is rich in natural resources and youthful talent, the continent continues to battle climate change, illegal mining, deforestation, pollution and biodiversity loss. He stressed that these challenges also present opportunities for innovation.

He argued that Africa cannot build an inclusive green economy while women remain underrepresented in science, engineering and policymaking.

"We cannot build an inclusive green economy while excluding half of our population... Girls must not be invited only to witness Africa's green transformation. They must be equipped to lead it," he stated.

Adams further called for practical environmental education, urging schools to become "living laboratories of sustainability" where students learn through tree planting, recycling, renewable energy and climate-smart agriculture instead of relying solely on classroom instruction.

He also appealed to governments, schools, businesses and development partners to move beyond promises by investing in STEM education, mentorship, scholarships and green innovation for girls across the continent.

Addressing young girls directly, Adams encouraged them not to be discouraged by stereotypes.

"Your voice matters. Your ideas matter. Your dreams are valid... Do not allow anyone to convince you that science is beyond your ability or leadership beyond your reach," he said.

He concluded by urging stakeholders to take immediate action, saying Africa's green future would be built by "educated people, empowered girls, courageous innovators, responsible leaders and communities" working together to protect the environment while driving development.
