Former Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Inusah Fuseini, has stated that it is time for the government to end the practice of appointing Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) and instead allow residents to elect them directly.

According to him, accountability should not be sought from the central government but rather from leaders at the local level. Speaking in an interview on Eyewitness News, which was shared on X on August 4, 2026, Fuseini described the current arrangement as a misframing of the issue.

“I also do not support the government’s position on the election of MMDCEs. I think that it’s a misframing of the issue. It’s not executive accountability that Ghanaians are looking for."

"They’re looking for accountability at the lower level. That people who are elected at the lower level to be their DCEs must be directly accountable to the people and not somewhere else,” he added.

Fuseini further criticised the nomination process, stating: “So for the president to say, I’m going to nominate five, the PSC will pull it down to three, and then… (sic)."

'No one has convinced me why Ghana needs a five-year presidential term. Until then, I will not support it...What we should be discussing is efficiency, not extending presidential terms'.
