There are few football stories quite like that of Senegal’s Adji Ndiaye.

In the space of just two years, Ndiaye has gone from scoring goals as a striker for Senegal’s U20 side to becoming the goalkeeper trusted to protect the Lionesses’ goal at the biggest stage in African women’s football.

Her journey is remarkable because the two positions could hardly be more different.

In 2024, Ndiaye was used as an attacker at the WAFU Zone A U20 tournament in Senegal.

She finished as her team’s leading scorer with four goals, including one in the final as Senegal defeated Guinea-Bissau 3-0 to retain the title.

She also scored against The Gambia and Mali during the tournament.
But scoring goals was only one side of her footballing identity.

Ndiaye had already demonstrated that she could play in goal. In 2023, she made history by playing as Senegal’s goalkeeper in a senior Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Mozambique before switching to striker for the U20 team and scoring against Guinea less than two weeks later.

That extraordinary versatility has continued to define her career.

Born on August 4, 2006, Ndiaye came through AS Bambey and, despite her youth, quickly became a senior international goalkeeper.

At the 2024 WAFCON, she was Senegal’s first-choice goalkeeper, starting all four matches as the Lionesses reached the quarter-finals.

Now, at the 2026 WAFCON, she has taken another significant step.

Ndiaye has established herself between the posts for Senegal, producing a standout performance in a must-win game against hosts Morocco on Monday, August 3, 2026.

The goalkeeper made seven saves, including a penalty, to earn the Woman of the Match award.

Her rise has not gone unnoticed. She was named among the nominees for the 2025 CAF Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year award alongside some of Africa’s most established goalkeepers.

What makes Ndiaye’s story particularly fascinating is that she has not abandoned the attacking instincts developed during her youth.

At just 20, Ndiaye is already a senior international, a WAFCON goalkeeper and a former youth-team goalscorer.
