Belgium winger Jeremy Doku has defended his decision to temporarily leave the national team's FIFA World Cup camp to attend the birth of his son, insisting that family ranks above football.

Speaking in an interview on YouTube, Doku addressed the criticism he received after flying home during the tournament, explaining that he was already struggling with injury and was medically unable to play.

"I wasn't able to play either way, so I decided to go back and see my son," Doku said.

The Manchester City star praised Belgium's national team officials for supporting his decision and making arrangements that allowed him to witness the birth.

"They made a way. They wanted to help me attend the birth of my son, and I'm really grateful."

Doku acknowledged that many people questioned the timing of his departure, with some suggesting the situation had been planned.

"I understand why people thought it looked orchestrated because everything happened perfectly."

However, he maintained there was nothing deliberate about the circumstances. Reflecting on the public debate, Doku said the experience reminded him of his priorities.

"In the Kingdom of Heaven, it's Jesus first, family second, then football. But the world often puts football above everything else."

He also surprised many by defending one of the journalists criticised for questioning his decision, saying he harboured no bitterness.

"I don't want people to be harsh on her. I pray she experiences the love of Christ. She only shared her opinion."
