President John Dramani Mahama has humorously recounted moments in his marriage with Lordina Mahama when they engaged in lighthearted disagreements over issues concerning their relationship.

According to him, during their 30th wedding anniversary, the couple visited a clergyman’s office for a discussion on their journey together.

During the conversation, Lordina remarked that the longevity of their marriage was largely due to her efforts, a claim he initially disagreed with.

Speaking at the Ringway Gospel Centre Assemblies of God Men’s Ministry Day on August 2, 2026, President Mahama said he was quickly advised by someone nearby to end the argument after realising it was one he could not win.

“So at thirty years of marriage, we said happy anniversary. After church, we went to the pastor’s office and were talking about thirty years of marriage. And Lordina said, ‘Ah, I’ve done well in this marriage. But for me, this marriage would have collapsed long ago. John, I have been patient with you. Without me, which woman would marry you?’

"And as a foolish young man, I said, ‘What? It is rather me. I am the patient one who has held this marriage.’ We were arguing and arguing. Then someone (Kweje) came and called me aside and said, ‘Now what kind of useless argument are you having? This argument you can never win, so stop.’ And I did,” he recounted humorously.

The President further disclosed that a similar situation occurred during another anniversary celebration, but this time he chose not to argue and instead acknowledged his wife’s contribution to their marriage.

“At our 32nd anniversary or so, we were in the same office and Lordina said, ‘Pastor, you see, I have done well, taken good care of this man, given him children too.’ She looked at me, and I said, ‘It’s true, you made this marriage work. Thank you, Lordina, and God bless you.’ She looked at me in surprise,” he added.

President Mahama advised couples, particularly men, to learn to respect one another, manage disagreements and avoid prolonged arguments that could undermine their relationships.

“Sometimes, even when I know I didn’t do anything wrong, I’ll just say, ‘I’m sorry, Lordina.’ And you get your peace, and the marriage continues. We should learn to respect and show dignity,” he concluded.
