Member of Parliament for Ahafo Ano South East, Mohammed Yakubu, has come under strong criticism from some Ghanaians on social media over comments he allegedly made to a group of school children during their visit to Parliament.

In a 50-second video shared by Ghanaian broadcaster Israel Laryea on his social media platforms on Friday, July 31, 2026, the MP is seen standing with other Members of Parliament while addressing the children.

During his remarks, Yakubu encouraged the pupils to study hard and pursue their dreams.

He recounted how he used to visit Parliament as a young boy and dreamt of becoming a Member of Parliament, a goal he said he has now achieved.

“I'm an MP in Ashanti Region. I just want to encourage you all, you know, I used to come here when I was schooling. I would see the MPs; I would be happy for them. I had a dream, and today, standing here as an MP is one of the dreams that I've worked for,” he said.

However, the interaction took a different turn when the lawmaker called on one of the female pupils and asked for her name, which she provided.

He then complimented the girl, describing her as beautiful, before proposing marriage to her and referring to her as his wife.

“What's your name? Okay, you're very beautiful. When you grow up, I'll marry you so, she's my wife. In future, she will also be an MP, and all of you as well will be somebody in the future. I wish you the best,” he added.

The remarks have since sparked criticism on social media, with some users describing them as inappropriate given that they were directed at a minor.

Others have called for immediate sanctions to be taken against the lawmaker.
