The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has shown clemency by sparing the Baapanin of Praso, Nana Kusiwaa Mansah II, from destoolment after it emerged that she was not of royal lineage.

According to a report by Opemsuo.com, Nana Kusiwaa Mansah II had claimed to be of royal descent and invoked the Great Oath before ascending the stool. However, investigations later established that she was not from the royal lineage.

A committee set up to investigate the dispute between the Baapanin and the family head, Opanin Kwaku Mensah, presented its findings to the Kumasi Traditional Council on July 30, 2026.

The Asantehene endorsed the committee's findings, confirming that Nana Kusiwaa Mansah II is not of royal lineage.

“This issue started simmering during the era of the late Nkonsonhene. He brought the case, and I urged him to abandon it. Had she agreed to appoint a member of the family to the male stool, we wouldn’t have gotten here. When I heard she had invoked the oath, I was surprised. She shouldn’t have done that,” Otumfuo said.

Otumfuo explained that Nana Kusiwaa Mansah II was selected for the stool after five women who had been considered before her abdicated it because of illness.

“The Abusuapanin recommended you to ascend the stool. You knew this,” Otumfuo said, before tracing her family tree.

The Asantehene also recalled that Nana Kusiwaa Mansah II had previously attempted to have her late brother enstooled as chief and later sought to install her son on the stool, but both attempts were opposed by the family.

He explained that the incidents triggered the committee's investigations, which uncovered that she had falsely claimed to be of royal lineage.

“At the time, she [Baapanin] was attempting to enstool her late brother as chief. The family abandoned their initial opposition. Her second attempt to appoint her son to the stool got out of hand and resulted in this,” he added.

However, the Asantehene chose to temper justice with mercy and urged Opanin Kwaku Mensah to allow Nana Kusiwaa Mansah II to remain on the stool in recognition of her dedicated service.

He further directed that upon her death, the stool should revert to the rightful royal lineage.
